Waterra - Big in Kazakhstan

Waterra has had a pretty good year, despite the recession, and one of the high points has been an increase in international enquiries and orders.

S140 peristaltic pump for low flow sampling
Our technical sales team have dealt with enquiries for groundwater monitoring equipment from as far afield as Kazakhstan, Indonesia and China. It's partly due to improvements in our website, which have made it easier to find, but the growth in enquiries from developing nations is also due to the increasing recognition of how vital it is to look after groundwater supplies.

Industrialisation brings many benefits but as developed countries in Europe and North America will attest, there is a cost. Groundwater is very vulnerable to contamination and without adequate monitoring it is all too easy to create problems for the populace.

So we are delighted that our new customers are demonstrating a willingness to watch over their precious water resources before they become overwhelmed by progress.

We welcome international enquiries on +44 121 733 7743 or via email at sales@waterra-in-situ.com

PP1 – Groundwater monitoring veteran

Waterra is focused on providing equipment that is rugged enough for field use and durable to give a good return on investment, and here’s the proof.

The very first Waterra Powerpack PP1 to be sold back in 1998 has just come back into our workshops for a service and it’s still going strong – 12 years later!

The PP1 actuator, which is designed for use with Waterra Inertial Pumps, was purchased on 27th March 1998 by Devon Waste Management.  The company own a total of four Powerpack PP1’s for groundwater monitoring sampling and monitoring at landfill sites across the South West of England.

This particular unit is still used for day to day groundwater sampling, as well as being part of the rental fleet.

Tim Davies our Sales and Servicing Manager (see photo right) commented that, “Despite the potential for a bit of “rough treatment” while on hire this PP1 has shown that with regular servicing and maintenance these units are very long lasting.”

The Powerpack PP1 actuator provides a fully portable, single operator unit powerful enough to lift water with Waterra inertial pumps from over 60m depth. Companies like Devon Waste use the PP1 because its compact design allows it to be carried to places that many other pumps just cannot be deployed.

For more information call us today on 44 (0)121 733 7743 or visit the Waterra Powerpack PP1 page on our website for more details.

Groundwater Monitoring Training - A Great Year

Waterra UK Ltd. have just completed another successful year delivering their CPD accredited groundwater  training courses across the UK!

Over 85 delegates have attended our two training courses held at a variety of venues around the UK during 2010. The two courses, covering groundwater sampling methodology and the use of dataloggers for monitoring groundwater levels, have been extremely well received.

A lot of comments have been particularly positive about the hands-on nature of the workshops.

"Good balance between theory and practice.  Excellent demonstrations."

"Very good to see a wide range of water sampling equipment presented with practicality and knowledge"

Waterra are the only training provider in this field with CPD accreditation from the Geological Society. Peter Dumble, Chartered Hydrogeologist and MD of Waterra says:

“This hard-earned accolade is only achieved by delivering impartial information on groundwater sampling and monitoring methods. We don’t promote any one method of sampling or type of equipment and our courses provide hard information, experience and choice.  We are happy to share our knowledge of what works in practice and highlight what's new in research and development from around the world."

"We are currently planning our course schedule for 2011.  We hope to add new courses to meet the demand for better training in groundwater monitoring practice. So look out for new courses in 2011!"

Journey to the Centre of the Earth - Complete

Waterra UK has just been notified that the Aenigma caving expedition to explore some the deepest caves on earth in the Western Caucasus has been completed.

You may remember that Waterra has provided support to the expedition, which had the objective of monitoring water levels in the cave system to allow safe exploration in future.

The expedition organisers have reported that the June water level in the main "Two Captains" system rose by a staggering 230 metres, with the lowest annual levels in August and September.  This has immediately signalled that it is more dangerous than expected to explore these depths.

For more information on the level measuring equipment that Waterra provided to the Aenigma expedition call us on  +44 (0)121 733 7743 today or visit the Waterra UK website.

Groundwater Sampling Training Course - Second Session Available

Waterra UK's has laid on a second day of CPD accredited groundwater sampling course on Thursday 9th September  because the original session Wednesday 8th September is now completely full!

Peter Dumble. MD of Waterra UK says “We are delighted at the  popularity of this course, which has largely filled by word of mouth recommendation from previous delegates. There is a lot of conflicting advice in circulation in relation to sampling methodology, mixing mechanisms in boreholes and equipment selection. This course aims to send delegates away with the understanding of how to take groundwater samples in the field more confidently .”

These courses are a great way to update your knowledge of groundwater sampling methods and to gain hands-on experience using working examples of the broadest range of sampling devices available on the market, including traditional and “low flow” sampling pumps, passive samplers and more!

To book your place or get more information visit the Waterra training page on our website or call us on 44 (0)121 733 7743.

Telescopic samplers to help meet health and safety standards

Waterra UK has seen quite an increase in orders recently for our TeleScoop telescopic samplers.

The feedback from clients is very interesting. Apparently Health and Safety legislation is making them reticent about sending employees scrambling down riverbanks or wading through watercourses.  The TeleScoop, which has a reach of up to 4.5 metres is ideal for safe sampling from bridges or from the banks of streams, rivers, ponds or lakes.

The TeleScoop can be equipped with a number of different beakers, bottles and scoops to collect samples.  It can also be fitted with a peristaltic pump that allows multiple samples to be collected without continual retrieving of a sampling vessel.

Interestingly the TeleScoop is being used in waster water applications in sewage farms and tanks too because of its safety compliance and sampling capabilities.

Geotechnica 2010 - A good show for Waterra UK

Waterra UK had a great time at the Geotechnica 2010 trade show.

Our focus this year was on low flow and passive sampling techniques and equipment.  We were able to highlight the potential cost savings and ease of use of equipment like the Solinst discrete interval samplers that are ideal for sampling below an oil/product layer.

As usual the event was a great opportunity to meet up with some of our old friends in the industry and, importantly for us, generate some excellent business leads.

We look forward to Geotechnica 2011!

Groundwater monitoring training - Delegate total hits the century mark

Waterra UK has now taken more than 100 delegates through training on groundwater monitoring methodologies and equipment since we started our 1 day and half day programme of public courses.

As Peter Dumble, Waterra UK MD, said "this is quite a moment for the company because we weren't sure what the take up of our training courses would be like when we started out.  People like the practical nature of the sessions and are excited by the opportunities that low flow sampling techniques offer to save money and reduce effort."

Our most recent workshop, held in Glasgow, was attended by a lot of representatives from the energy sector.  We are beginning to find that delegates are coming from a wider variety of industries and organisations than when we first started.  A function of the new environmental legislation coming through perhaps?

The next training session in the calendar focuses on groundwater sampling methodologies and is being held in Birmingham on Wednesday 8th September.

For more information on Waterra's training courses and to download a booking form visit the training pages on our website or call us at 44 (0)121 733 7743 today.

Reduce the cost of groundwater sampling

The need to undertake groundwater sampling is increasing as legislation (particularly the  water framework directive) requires businesses to take responsibility for monitoring their own impact on groundwater.

Businesses are now assessing and reviewing techniques to take samples from boreholes and wells. They are likely to be concerned at the costs of sampling using standard methods involving pumping and purging of boreholes prior to sampling. Purging is a costly process because it requires expensive equipment, takes signifcant time and labour effort and can involve the need to dispose and treat contaminated waste water.

Here's some good news. There are cheaper and equally effective alternatives!

A comparison of the overall cost of groundwater sampling using diffferent sampling methodologies and equipment in the USA reveals that passive sampling methods can cost up to 70% less than conventional 3 well volume or low purge sampling methods - and yield comparable water quality results!

Let's focus today on the HydraSleeve. The HydraSleeve passive sampling method is a highly accurate way of obtaining discrete and multiple interval samples. Just as importantly costs per sample are much lower than standard methods.
  • The training overhead is lower.
  • It requires less man power to use.
  • No purge water is produced for remediation or disposal
  • Sampling is safe and quick - no mechanical or electrical equipment involved.
Waterra has the full range of HydraSleeve samplers and accessories available. We also provide groundwater sampling training courses that will give you key insights in how to use HydraSleeve or see other methods in action.

To find out how you could use HydraSleeve to reduce the cost of your groundwater sampling call 44 (0)121 733 7743 today.

PhD opportunity. Groundwater sampling methodology for long-screened boreholes

Waterra are providing industrial support funding, along with the Environment Agency, for a PhD studentship on groundwater quality at the University of Birmingham.

The research will be looking specifically at the rigorous sampling and interpretation of long-screen monitoring wells and and boreholes. The objective is to evaluate innovations such as passive and low flow sampling and and develop process-based monitoring protocols.

"This is a great opportunity to improve the guidance on groundwater sampling methodologies", said Peter Dumble, MD of Waterra UK. "New techniques allow long-screen monitoring wells to provide far more accurate and reliable samples and we anticipate that the research project will help to quantify the benefits of the new approaches."

The project is now looking for a dynamic student with both practical field and data interpretation skills. Field research will take place at a variety of UK study sites and the student will have the chance to trial a wide variety of sampling technologies.

Further details on the PhD project (and a link to the application form) are available at the University of Birmingham Doctoral Researcher site.

Battery recycling rules - good for groundwater

New EU rules have come into force today which should help to reduce the contamination of groundwater from discarded batteries.

The UK has lagged behind other EU countries in the safe disposal of batteries with over 90% ending up in landfill sites. From now on retailers who sell more than 32kg of batteries per year will have to provide recycling bins and participate in a collection scheme. The objective is that by 2012 at least 25% of batteries will be recycled and that by 2016 the figure will be 45%.

"This is a very positive step forward because batteries contain a cocktail of hazardous chemicals and metals", said Peter Dumble, MD of Waterra UK. "If we can give the public easy ways to participate in the recycling process then I am sure they will respond. And reducing the number of batteries going into landfill will help us to protect the integrity of the country's groundwater supplies. Waterra have been recycling batteries used in-house for several years and in the last month have submitted our 2009 annual return to the Environment Agency for batteries placed on the market in 2009 - amounting to considerably less than 1 Kg in total!"

2010 will see a lot of emphasis on groundwater issues as the Water Framework Directive is rolled out. Individual companies are being given a lot more responsibility for monitoring their impact on groundwater and the penalties for contamination are becoming increasingly punitive.

Water Framework Directive - the next big challenge?

From a Waterra perspective 2010 sees the start of a major focus on the implications of the Water Framework Directive and in particular how Operator Self Monitoring (OSM) will work in practice.

Waterra has supplied many businessess in the water and energy sectors for many years and many of these already well positioned to achieve the standards required. But what happens as OSM is rolled out across other industry sectors? Food and drink, for instance, is one of the largest industry sectors and a major user of water resources - it also produces a significant quantity of waste. Are companies in this sector, particularly SMEs, at all aware of their responsibilities and the monitoring regimes they may need to comply with?

Waterra will be working hard through 2010 and beyond to support clients affected by new guidance arising from the roll out of the Water Framework Directive and looking at what solutions we can bring to the table to help industry sectors and individual businesses comply with the regulations.

If you have any issue regarding the directive or you need to understand how you can meet the OSM requirements then call us today on +44 (0)121 733 7743.
