The Stream Flow Meter is designed to be easy to use in field conditions and features a fold-away impeller stick, 3 riser rods and a battery powered hand meter.

"We have had quite an increase in interest in surface water monitoring and sampling equipment recently and it is great to be able to add a very practical piece of kit to our range," said Peter Dumble, Waterra UK's MD. "Our Stream Flow Meter provides the capability for operators to take open channel measurement at different heights above the stream bed.  This is a feature which our clients have been very keen for us to incorporate."

Need to know more about passive groundwater sampling? Here's how.

The next date for Waterra's highly successful series of groundwater sampling training courses is Wednesday 24th March in Birmingham.

Previous delegates have found our courses highly beneficial:
'Thank you for a great day, spot on, very informative and pitched at right level. / The level of experience and knowledge of the presenters was excellent compared to other courses provided by consultants! / Level of info was fantastic – now clear on options available and can change company procedure with the aim of moving forward’

Waterra training courses are designed to be highly practical and give attendees a hands-on opportunity to try out a wide range of different monitoring and sampling devices and techniques. This is your chance to get an expert view on the pros and cons of purging strategies such as "low flow", "3 well volumes" and "passive" (no purge) groundwater sampling.

Courses are now fully endorsed by the Geological Society for CPD purposes.

Battery recycling rules - good for groundwater

New EU rules have come into force today which should help to reduce the contamination of groundwater from discarded batteries.

The UK has lagged behind other EU countries in the safe disposal of batteries with over 90% ending up in landfill sites. From now on retailers who sell more than 32kg of batteries per year will have to provide recycling bins and participate in a collection scheme. The objective is that by 2012 at least 25% of batteries will be recycled and that by 2016 the figure will be 45%.

"This is a very positive step forward because batteries contain a cocktail of hazardous chemicals and metals", said Peter Dumble, MD of Waterra UK. "If we can give the public easy ways to participate in the recycling process then I am sure they will respond. And reducing the number of batteries going into landfill will help us to protect the integrity of the country's groundwater supplies. Waterra have been recycling batteries used in-house for several years and in the last month have submitted our 2009 annual return to the Environment Agency for batteries placed on the market in 2009 - amounting to considerably less than 1 Kg in total!"

2010 will see a lot of emphasis on groundwater issues as the Water Framework Directive is rolled out. Individual companies are being given a lot more responsibility for monitoring their impact on groundwater and the penalties for contamination are becoming increasingly punitive.

Rain Gauge and Logger Package from Waterra

Waterra, the groundwater monitoring experts, have put together a package of rain gauge and the new Solinst Rainlogger to offer a robust and reliable way of gathering rainfall data.

"Our customers have been very keen to get highly durable field units that can handle a large quantity of readings and have a long-lasting battery to reduce maintenance visits", said Peter Dumble, Waterra's MD. "This package holds up to 40,000 readings and has a 10 year battery life: it's just right."

Collected rain is measured by the well-proven tipping bucket method connected to the Solinst Rainlogger which counts each tip of the bucket.

Levelogger customers can add rainfall data to their water level monitoring networks using the same easy to use Levelogger accessories and software.
