European Distributors Meeting

European expansion is being driven by the enthusiasm of our new distribution network

Waterra-In-Situ's second distributor meeting, held recently in Birmingham, highlighted the progress we have made in creating a dynamic, pan-European operation.

Dieter Grieß, our European Distribution Manager, has been highly active in 2013. His role has been both to recruit partners in new territories and provide support to the existing network. As a result the 18 attendees, representing countries from Spain in the West to Ukraine in the East, arrived with a real determination to both learn from and contribute to the discussion on products, applications and opportunities.

In a packed agenda we were able to reveal some exciting news about new product developments (watch this space for public announcements, which might just include something on Telemetry!), highlight the EU infrastructure development programme that is rolling out across Eastern Europe and capture vital feedback for new product development.

We were also delighted to have Cindy Coughenour, Chris Williams and Jenny Mann from In-Situ Inc. on-hand.  They highlighted both the corporate backing to all of exciting growth prospects and offer their wisdom and expertise on deployment and operation of In-Situ's water monitoring products.

So we are heading into 2014 with a renewed vigour for European growth and, for our clients in the UK and Ireland too, plenty of of good news about new products and new capability.

Stand by for our transition from Waterra-In-Situ to In-Situ-Europe.

In-Situ Inc. An innovating wonder since 1976

Our parent company's appearance on the "Worlds' Greatest" TV show in the US gave us a great opportunity to share some facts about its history and success.

In-Situ Inc. started life in the basement of its founder, Dr Chester McKee, in 1976.  Since then it has become a major driver of innovation in the design and manufacture of water monitoring instruments.

The company is based in Fort Collins, Colorado, at the base of the Rocky Mountain foothills. Colorado is the embodiment the frontier spirit of the United States as well as incorporating much of its pristine wilderness areas. This make it the perfect location for generating the kinds of new products that;
  • Help protect the environment.
  • Ensure adequate water supplies.
  • Provide protection from flooding.
  • Support the clean-up of contaminated sites.

In-Situ Inc. supports on-going research into water management including the Watershed Innovation Network project run in conjunction with Colorado State University. The company's instruments have significantly improved the water quality monitoring capability of the project.  It's worth noting that in the UK Waterra-In-Situ has also supported a number of research projects that you can read about on the case histories section of the website.

If you want to find out more about In-Situ Inc. or see videos of the latest products then take a look at the YouTube channel.

Kayleigh boldly goes where no turbidity monitor has gone before

Our very own Kayleigh Smith has braved the most inhospitable surface water conditions to raise money for charity.

Kayleigh, Field Sales Manager (Northern & Scotland), has taken part in not one but two gruelling challenges over the last 6 weeks.

At the beginning of August she completed the 6.6.6 Demon Challenge, a series of physical and mental trials taking place over 6 hours, 6 minutes and 6 seconds, based on Navy Seals Hell Week.

At the beginning of September Kayleigh saw off The Wolf Run, a 10k event featuring a series of man-made and natural obstacles designed to re-create the feeling of running in natural terrain.

The connecting feature of these two activities seems to be that Kayleigh, and her fellow athletes from OPT (Outdoor Physical Training), spent an awful lot of time dunked in water at varying states of turbidity. Judging by the photos the word "water" should be substituted with "mud" - what is the turbidity of thick gooey mud?

All of this exertion is for a good cause.

OPT raises money for The Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, which is the receiving hospital for all the UK's military patients from around the world. The JustGiving page is still open by the way.

We are delighted that Kayleigh has made it back into work unscathed, more or less.  On this evidence, however, she will have no excuses to decline any difficult field visits that come her way in the future.

You may have looked at these pictures and actually wondered how you would measure the turbidity of the water. In that case perhaps we can point you in the direction of our turbidity colorimeters, which offers effective measurement up to 1000 FTU.

Photo highlights - groundwater training course

The latest running of our Groundwater Sampling Methodology and Equipment training course proved so popular that we had to add an additional day to cope with the demand.

We were fortunate to be blessed with some late summer sunshine. This meant our outside demonstrations of an SP1 suction pump, manual inertial pump and PowerPack PP1 single operator power unit for inertials, could be conducted in some comfort.

Tim Davies, Kayleigh Smith, Stephen Wallice and Peter Dumble in action
After a review of the wide range of methodologies now available for groundwater sampling the Waterra-In-Situ team provided some close quarters demonstrations of some of the equipment available for you to use. The star of the show had to be the SmartTROLL hand held water quality monitoring instrument.  The management, monitoring and reporting capability of the smartphone app is rather impressive.

Remember to check the training section of our website, this blog, Twitter or our LinkedIn company page for details of new training course dates as they become available.

If you are looking for innovative solutions to your water monitoring requirements call us today on

Successful slug test demo. No slugs harmed

Waterra-In-Situ's latest "Water Level Measurement using Data Loggers" course was a sell-out success.

"And for my next trick..." Kayleigh Smith
Field Sales Manager (North) in action.
Delegate's branded the training session as being very helpful in developing their understanding of the latest techniques and technology available.

However there were two observations that we found particularly interesting, because they made us stop and consider the state of the marketplace.

One delegate commented that they were particularly pleased in the way that we delivered the course saying that: "I thought that would be all over my head but you explained things in a way that I completely understood."

More than one attendee expressed their delight in getting to see a slug test in practice because most suppliers just assume that everybody is familiar with their operation.

What these comments say to us is that while we can all be thankful for the improvements in the accuracy, reliability and durability of today's water level and water quality monitoring equipment, we have a responsibility to all our users. That means making sure everybody is up to speed not just on the technology itself but on using and applying the technology whoever they are and whatever they need it for.

Fortunately the Waterra-In-Situ team is well-practised in offering practical help and advice. In addition we have water industry practitioners on hand as well as product experts to deal with your requests.

So if you need training, product support or help choosing the right equipment for your level measurement requirements simple call us today on +44 (0) 121 733 7743 or email sales@waterra-in-situ.com.

Our next CPD course is our hands-on Groundwater Sampling Methodology on September 4th 2013.

Field Filtration of Water Samples

Five reasons why you should filter your samples on site:
  1. The Environment Agency guidance states that you should!
  2. You should not be fixing your samples unless they have been filtered
  3. Your sample can change even if it’s filtered at the lab next day
  4. Ask your lab - most will expect the sample to be pre-filtered for metals
  5. Filtering doesn't have to take extra time on site
And a single solution to making it all happen.

Waterra-In-Situ's FHT-45 Disposable Micron Filters In-Line Disposable Filters are easy to use with bailers and most sampling pumps.
They are primarily used for for field filtration of water samples being collected for inorganic and dissolved metals analysis.

The unique open pleat geometry of our in-line filters provides maximum media exposure and sample flow, making them ideal for use with:
  • Bailers
  • Inertial Pumps
  • Suction Pumps
  • Peristaltic Pumps
  • Submersible Pumps
  • Bladder Pumps
All Waterra-In-Situ In-line Disposable Filters are independently certified to rinse clean for dissolved metals sampling. Certificates are supplied with every box of 100 filters and can be supplied on request for smaller order quantities.

To purchase your in-line filters with the special June discounts call us today on +44 (0) 121 733 7743 or email sales@waterra-in-situ.com.

Tim Davies – This is Your Life!

A milestone has been reached by one of Waterra-In-Situ's team

Tim Davies inside sales for Waterra-In-Situ
The good old days of sampling
... and hair  cuts
We didn’t have Eamonn Andrews or Michael Aspel to do the honours but we did recently celebrate the 20th anniversary of Tim Davies joining the Waterra-In-Situ team.

Lots of things have changed since that auspicious day back in 1992; our product range, our offices and most notably Tim’s hairstyle, but we are pleased to say he is as enthusiastic in his dealings with customers as ever.
Tim has built up a considerable knowledge of water quality monitoring products and, importantly, he knows how to use them in the field.  This means he can be relied upon to answer both sales calls and customer support requests with great authority. He's also passing on his knowledge to our new colleague in Inside Sales, Mark Tanner. By the way, despite the evidence of the photo, Tim now claims that he does not own a pair of jeans.

From Tim’s perspective the market has changed beyond all recognition:

“The sophistication of the equipment that we have available for customers today makes the instruments we first sold look like something from the Stone Age.  We can offer fantastic levels of accuracy, durability and ease of use – the challenge is maintaining our understanding of specifications and deployment options so we can best advise our clients.”

Tim Davies field testing a peristaltic pump
Older and wiser
Many of you will have spoken with Tim on the telephone or met in him in person at our training courses but there are some things about him that we bet you didn't know.

Firstly, he is a Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Expedition Leader who gives up a lot of his spare time to support local youth groups.

Secondly, and very unexpectedly, he has a City and Guilds qualification in Cake Decorating – although we have never got to actually test out the validity of this award.

And finally, ahh: he has just ordered his first pair of varifocal glasses.  A sign of exactly how long he has been around. We estimated Tim's been here for 39,000 hours, which equates to 42,000 cups of tea based on in-depth analysis of the kitchen output!

Congratulations for lasting out this long Tim.  May your next twenty years be equally fruitful.

To benefit from Tim's experience call our technical support team today on +44 (0)121 733 7743.
